What is the Western Pennsylvania Diaper Bank?

The Western Pennsylvania Diaper Bank (WPADB) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. They are an affiliate of the National Diaper Bank Network (NDBN), a nonprofit organization established in 2012. The NDBN is dedicated to ensuring every baby in the United States can be clean, dry, and healthy. They provide free technical and business development assistance to WPADB. In turn, they advise other organizations.

The WPADB is the only regional nonprofit organization focused solely on the distribution of diapers to families of low-income or poverty levels. In addition, the WPADB acts as an informal clearinghouse, referring families to organizations that focus on other issues families in need may encounter.

Civic groups, businesses, churches, and schools as well as individuals have organized successful diaper drives. This allows the WPADB to provide diapers to families in need in the Western PA region.

How Does the Diaper Bank Work?

The WPADB partners with nonprofit social service agencies. They supply free diapers for them to distribute to pre-qualified families at the low-income or poverty level. This establishes a regular distribution channel for the diapers and ensures that they reach families in need. The partners help spread awareness of the program to constituents, potential donors, and potential partners. Active partners distribute diapers to families they serve in three counties – Allegheny, Fayette, and Westmoreland.

This simple model has resulted in the exponential growth of diaper collections year over year.
